Dog GPS collar buying guide

A GPS collar or tracker can be a valuable addition to your dog's kit. These devices use GPS, mobile networks and sometimes Wi‑Fi to share your dog's location via an app. Modern trackers offer more than just a dot on the map.

Why a GPS tracker?

• Real‑time location information: The core function of a GPS tracker is to show your pet's current location. Thanks to GPS and mobile networks you can quickly find your dog if they slip away.
• Geofencing and escape alerts: Many trackers let you set up a virtual fence (geofence). You get a notification when your dog leaves this area so you can act quickly.
• Activity monitoring: Some models track steps, distance and active play time. This helps you monitor your dog's wellbeing.
• Safety net, not a replacement: A GPS collar complements a microchip and ID tag – it never replaces them. Reliable identification remains essential to get a lost dog home quickly.

What to look for when choosing?

• Size and fit: The device should not hinder your dog. Choose a lightweight, waterproof collar or module that fits your dog's size.
• Materials and durability: A sturdy, waterproof housing is indispensable for adventures in all weather.
• Battery life: Check the battery life – some trackers need daily charging, others last weeks. A long battery is handy for hikes or holidays.
• Subscriptions and coverage: Real‑time tracking often requires a mobile subscription. Check the costs and coverage areas.
• Privacy and data use: Read how the manufacturer handles location data and whether you can share it with other family members.
